The most recent data from Public Health England shows that 75,953 confirmed and probable cases of the Covid-19 Delta variant have now been found in the UK – up by 33,630, or 79 per cent, on the previous week.
The government has vowed to tackle the spread of the variant by surging testing and vaccinations in the areas most affected, many of which are in the north west of England.
