Tesco has apologised after a shopper was left disgusted by a 'racist' T-shirt. Mum Katie Well was shocked when she saw the words 'her hair is too fluffy' next to a black mermaid on the garment.

She spotted the item, which is inspired by the children's book 'That's Not My Mermaid', while out shopping at Tesco in Whitfield, Kent, today.

Tesco vowed to never buy the design again and apologised for any offence caused, although it did not commit to stopping sales of existing stock, Kent Live reports.

The mum was with her two daughters when she saw the top, with Tesco now pledging it will not buy the design again. 'That’s Not My Mermaid', which is written by Fiona Watt and illustrated by Rachel Wells, is on sale via Amazon and is in bookshops.
