It is thought the victim was in a car which was pursued by a second vehicle. The chase is thought to have started in Moss Side, Manchester, and ended in Old Trafford, where the boy was stabbed to death in Norton Street.
Detectives have established the victim was in the car being chased. Others who were in the car with him have not yet been traced.
After the murder GMP set up a cordon in Moss Side covering a large section of Princess Road and a small section of Great Western Street as they tried to establish where precisely the pursuit had started.
