Hooters to open in Liverpool city centre has had a petition launched against it, calling the plans and bar "archaic and chauvinistic".The online petition was launched by angry residents and local government officials who opposed plans for the beer and bar food brand to open up shop on the high street, Liverpool Echo reports.Among the angry responses were the Mayor of Liverpool and Merseyside's Police and Crime Commissioner, with the petition set up by Labour councillor Maria Toolan.It calls on Liverpool Council to deny the licensing application Hooters are seeking out, with a link to the petition shared ahead of a licensing hearing scheduled for February 15.The petition claims that if the bar is given the go-ahead, it will attract a "narrow unwanted demographic" and a rise in anti-social behaviour. The chain is well-known in the US for its beer and bar food, often served by scantily-clad waitresses.Councillor Toolan initially objected to Hooters' proposals in a letter to city centre residents alongside colleague Cllr Nick Small.An online form has also been set up by Toolan for residents to add their names to a list of those opposed to the prospective Hooters plans.The petition says: "Hooters is an archaic and chauvinistic brand and this type of venue is no longer reflective of today's society."Hooters employs women to promote its business activities in an exploitative manner, it demeans and degrades women and undermines female equality."We believe it will attract interest from a narrow unwanted demographic and will cause increased anti-social behaviour."We have the support of our Mayor, Police Commissioner, MPs, and local residents and we hope we can rely on yours.
