Aside from what filmmaker Ari Aster is doing these days, emotional horror is not really a thing, or a recognized genre yet, but let’s justify its existence. Especially given we lived through the existentially withering horror of 2020, and an age when half our society demands more empathy, and the other half is brutally resentful that you’d dare ask such a thing.

Well, at least we still have movies – even if theaters are still relatively no-go zones. For all its ensuing stress, November has a strong list of films on its slate, some of which have already built significant buzz following rounds on the film festival circuit this year (some of which even premiered in 2019, approximately 20 years ago.) In the line-up, there’s a return of David Fincher, some of the finest animation in recent years, leading performances from perennial favorite Carrie Coon, and Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan as lovers.

Filmmaker Aneesh Chaganty stormed Utah in 2018 with his 2018 breakout thriller “Searching,” for which he won the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

Another week, another studio film ditches a theatrical release and heads straight for the digital domain. Last week, it was announced that Lionsgate is taking its upcoming thriller, “Antebellum,” and sending it straight to PVOD.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge makes a return to television on Wednesday with a cameo in the Sky comedy Run.

We’re just hearing that the Scott Graham-directed Run, a movie feature steeped in the mythos of Bruce Springsteen songs about growing up and growing old in the same small town, is set to debut on digital and DVD at the end of May.

To take our minds of the pandemic, there's the option of binge-watching old and new series that are available to us on various platforms. Amongst the new shows that have caught our eyes is HBO's Run, a romantic comedy starring Merritt Weaver and Domhnall Gleeson as the leads.

For as long as there have been romantic comedies, there have been erstwhile lovers making convoluted bets and flirty deals with so little basis in reality that they might as well be science fiction. When was the last time you heard a real person use the phrase “If neither of us are married by 40, we’ll marry each other,” despite hearing characters say as much over and over again in movies and TV shows? It’s the kind of gamble that fictional stories love to make by turning feelings that are far more likely in the real world to remain sexy subtext into blunt text, flat-out daring its characters not to fall in love with each other. (Completely unsurprising spoiler alert: They always fall in love with each other.)

Just last year, the lyrical genius of Bruce Springsteen inspired coming-of-age drama Blinded by the Light; now, The Boss’ music is once again fuelling British cinema – this time, with 1975 anthem ‘Born to Run’ laying the foundation for Scott Graham’s third feature: Scottish-drama Run.
