Michel Audiard’s ‘Hidden Gem’ of French Post-War Noir, ‘The Night Affair,’ Showcased at the Lumière Festival
Kaleem Aftab The hallmarks of screenwriter Michel Audiard – slang-laden dialogue, absurd situations and explosive confrontations – are all in evidence in Gilles Grangier’s “The Night Affair” (“Le Désordre et la nuit”), screening at the Lumière Film Festival as part of the program marking the centenary of Audiard’s birth. The celebration features 18 films scripted by Audiard, one of his directorial efforts, “Don’t Take God’s Children for Wild Geese,” a pastiche of the hardboiled detective thrillers made famous by French publishing imprint Série Noire, and a new documentary on his life, “Le Terminus des prétentieux,” helmed by Sylvain Perret, wherein Gaumont opens their archives to reveal some undiscovered gems from the scenarist’s career.
