Cheat Codes, arriving on August 12, is a collaborative project from Danger Mouse (the multiple Grammy Award-winning producer and Gnarls Barkley co-founder) and Black Thought, who raps with The Roots and has recently begun to receive his flowers as one of the best rappers ever. Today, the duo have shared the project's second single "Because," a posse cut with Joey Bada$$, Russ, and Dylan Cartlidge.

Black Thought, the renowned emcee for The Roots born Tariq Trotter, has announced a memoir via Variety. The Upcycled Self will be published on November 14 through One World; preorders are open now. The book is described as “a beautifully bluesy story of a boy genius’s coming of age” in a statement from the publisher.

This week’s guest on The FADER Interview is Black Thought. The Roots’ co-founder and lead emcee joined FADER contributor Timmhotep Aku for a spirited, in-depth discussion of Glorious Game, his new collaborative album with El Michels Affair. In the course of their conversation, he shared the story behind another project he’s been teasing for years: Streams of Thought Vol.

The Roots bassist Leonard Hubbard and Hubbard’s estate is suing band co-founders Questlove and Black Thought for fraud.The Roots’ bandmembers Questlove and Black Thought, along with their band manager Shawn Gee and band employee Munir Nuriddin, are among those whom Stephanie Hubbard and Hubbard’s estate claim violated RICO laws and defrauded the bassist out of millions.In the complaint obtained by Rolling Stone the claimants allege that Questlove (real name Ahmir Thompson), Black Thought (real name Tariq Trotter), Gee and Nuriddin “are advancing a continuing scheme to defraud” the estate and Stephanie of money. Live Nation Entertainment, Universal Music Publishing Group, and other companies that are associated with the band’s businesses are also named in the lawsuit.The Roots bandmembers formed Grand Negaz, Inc., a corporate entity used for business dealings, in 1993.

Cheat Codes will be released on August 12 via BMG and features appearances from A$AP Rocky and Run The Jewels on one track, Conway The Machine, Raekwon, Kid Sister, and Joey Bada$$ among others. Danger Mouse and Black Thought have announced that they’ll be dropping a collaborative album this summer.Set to be released on August 12 via BMG, ‘Cheat Codes’ is Danger Mouse’s first hip-hop full-length since his ‘DANGERDOOM’ collaboration with the late MF DOOM which was released back in October 2005.It follows Black Thought’s pioneering output with legendary Philadelphia group The Roots and his critically acclaimed solo trilogy, ‘Streams Of Thought’ – the third volume of which was released in 2020.‘Cheat Codes’ – which was initially rumoured to be called ‘Dangerous Thoughts’ – is something that the pair began the initial idea for “maybe 13 or 14 years ago”, Black Thought revealed when he first teased the project in an interview back in 2020.“It’s a feel-good record,” he said. “It’s a record for people who got into hip-hop and sort of evolved at the same period of time that we did. The Roots’ Black Thought is the latest guest on NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert, the domestic spin on the popular session series. From a black armchair flanked by Grammys, he played “Thought Vs. The Roots’ lead MC Black Thought will contribute music and lyrics to a stage adaptation of George S. Schuyler’s 1931 novel Black No More, as Rolling Stone points out. According to RS, Black Thought will also star in the musical version of Schuyler’s Harlem Renaissance-era book. Black No More is slated to premiere at Pershing Square Signature Center in October 2020 during the New Group’s 2020 to 2021 theatrical season.

The Roots crew continues bringing dope content to the masses via their Two One Five Entertainment production company. On Monday, May 25, The Root and The Bridge, executive produced by Tina Farris and Suede, launched #TheRootsAfricaDay.
