A supermarket that vowed to 'take on' Aldi is now one of the most expensive in our weekly comparison. It was only back in October when Sainsbury's was working out third cheapest behind Aldi and Lidl for a basket of eight key grocery essentials including bread and milk.

But following two rises last week and another two this week, it's now just pennies behind the most expensive retailer Tesco, which knocked Asda off the spot after almost three months.

This week's hikes, in the cost of chicken breasts and butter, come after it increased the prices of bread and mince last week.
