A bargain bottle of supermarket bubbly has been declared a corker, beating posh labels that cost twice the price. Judges gave Morrisons’ £18 Adrien Chopin Brut 82 out of 100 and awarded it the Which?

Best Buy award. The “top class festive fizz” beat big names including Moet & Chandon, which is £36 a bottle, Lanson at £33 and Veuve Clicquot at £35.

Waitrose’s £19.99 Brut Champagne came second in the blind taste test of 18 brands, with a score of 79. Experts said it has “ripe red apples and apple blossom character”.

Sharing third place were Moet & Chandon for £36 and Sainsbury’s Landric Champagne costing £25 with 78 each. The panel included TV wine guru Oz Clarke and writer Charles Metcalfe, a judge of the International Wine Challenge.
