Sundance Retires Pilot Programs, Consolidates Others in COVID-Related Cuts (EXCLUSIVE)

Matt Donnelly Senior Film WriterThe Sundance Film Festival has consolidated or cut several pilot programs for filmmakers in an effort to stay nimble during the ongoing pandemic, Variety has learned exclusively,New Sundance CEO Joana Vicente, the well-liked executive who joined the premiere American festival from TIFF last year, announced the measures in a memo to staff on Tuesday.

Seven jobs have been eliminated as a result, according to the note obtained by Variety.The Sundance Interdisciplinary Program — a pilot which supported artists working across mediums with fellowships, residencies and labs — will phase out after its inaugural year.

The Film Music Program, which nurtured emerging composers and film fellows, has also folded. The nonprofit will now pivot its resources to fiction and nonfiction film and episodic storytellers, year-round.

Additionally, the digital endeavor Sundance Collab will shed some of its features to focus primarily on its most popular function, according to the memo.
