Communities could become cut off for days as a life-threatening "Beast from the East 2" batters the UK with up to 20ins of heavy snow and 50mph gale force winds.
A blast of freezing air from Russia and Eastern Europe has spawned Storm Darcy and triggered five days of Met Office severe weather warnings for snow, rain and ice, and guaranteeing disruption for many.
It is expected to be the coldest weather seen across the UK as a whole since the deadly Beast from the East hit in February 2018.
Some places are under warnings for almost an entire week - for 141 hours from 3pm on Thursday to 12pm on Wednesday - as relentless snow and blizzards threaten to make roads treacherous or impassable, and cut power to homes.
