Motherwell and at his peak he represented Scotland, as one of seven debutants, when he came on as a sub in a 3-0 win over the Faroe Islands in November 2010.
It’s a career that took him from Fir Park to Firhill, his last stop after he left last month, via Dingwall, Dumbarton, Wales and West Lothian.
Saunders was hampered by injuries for long spells but ultimately it was football’s short-termism that led to him looking for a career change.
He told “I’ve made this decision for the security of my family. I’ve been thinking for the last two years that football doesn’t last forever and coaching in Scotland doesn’t have the finances of England.“You can’t just look at year-to-year contracts.
