Stephen Wilhite, the man who created the GIF aka the Graphics Interchange Format, has passed away at the age of 74.

The 74-year-old computer programmer passed away due to complications from COVID-19. His obituary indicates that he passed away on March 14 after battling the illness.

He retired from programming in 2001 and spent time traveling and building model trains. “He invented GIF all by himself — he actually did that at home and brought it into work after he perfected it,” his wife Kathaleen told Verge. “He would figure out everything privately in his head and then go to town programming it on the computer.” Stephen once said that his favorite GIF was the dancing baby that you’ve likely seen before.
