NHS says there are five types of statin available on prescription in the UK. They include atorvastatin, fluvastatin pravastatin, rosuvastatin and simvastatin.
It notes a review of scientific studies into the effectiveness of statins found around one in every 50 people who take the medicine for five years will avoid a serious event, such as a heart attack or stroke, as a result.
Statins lower the level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in the blood, which is often referred to as "bad cholesterol", and statins reduce the production of it inside the liver.
The NHS says "if you find certain side effects particularly troublesome, talk to the doctor in charge of your care". The health body explains that your dose may need to be adjusted or you may need a different type of statin.
