An online petition urging the UK Government to raise the personal tax allowance from £12,570 to £20,000 has garnered over 12,000 signatures.
The move is aimed at assisting low-income individuals "get off benefits and allow pensioners a decent income". Having surpassed the 10,000 signature mark, the proposal is now due for a written response from the Government, likely from the Treasury.
The UK Government recently confirmed that the Personal Allowance will remain at £12,570 until the beginning of the 2028/29 financial year, reports the Daily Record.
However, Alan David Frost, the creator of the petition, contends that taxing pensioners on their State Pension above the personal allowance threshold is "abhorrent to tax pensioners on their State Pension when it is over the personal allowance" and believes the proposed increase would "inject more cash into the economy".
