“In the presence of real greatness”. That is how St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin fondly remembers his meetings with Rangers hero and former Scotland boss Walter Smith.
Like every gaffer at every level in Scotland, Goodwin was rocked by the news of the former Gers legend’s passing this morning.
He revealed that despite only meeting Smith on a couple of occasions, including an SFA coaching course as he started out on his own managerial career, he knew every time that he was in the presence of a Scottish icon.
