Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, is speaking out about Season 2. The creator of the series opened up about the real reason for doing the second season of the Netflix series, despite it affecting his health and losing “eight or nine” teeth from stress while filming Season 1.

In an interview with the BBC ahead of Season 2’s premiere, he said he at one point swore off making another season due to its adverse health effects, but he eventually changed his mind due to money. So doing the second series will help compensate me for the success of the first one too,” he told the BBC, adding that he also “didn’t fully finish the story.” He previously revealed he was paid upfront for Squid Game, and was not offered a “bonus” for the show’s success.

In response, a spokesperson for Netflix told the BBC that it offers “competitive” compensation, and guarantees creators “solid compensation, regardless of the success or failure of their shows.” The creator also told the BBC “the stress I feel now is much greater.” Though he hasn’t lost any more teeth yet, he ended the interview by saying he’ll “probably have to pull out a few more very soon.” Squid Game Season 2 premieres December 26 on Netflix.
