Southside Boxing Club equal club record medal haul at Western Districts

Southside Boxing Academy scored a record-equalling medal haul in the recent Western District School and Junior Championships.Held at M&D’s in Strathclyde Park, the Toryglen cub came away from the tournament with impressive results.With six gold medals and three silvers, this equalled the small club’s previous medal haul from a few years ago – and was the best medal tally by any club at the championships.Southside’s golds came from Callum Hand, John McGhee, Michael Campbell, Liam Smith, Ava Alison and Zain Iqbal, with silver medals for Finn Hunter, Culloch Gibson and Killin Ponsonby.Head coach Anton Quale was proud of his young boxers and said: “Considering most of our boxers, like most around the country, hadn’t boxed in a long time, this was an outstanding tournament for us.“The kids’ energy and commitment has been tremendous since we opened up again after lockdown and they’ve been rewarded for all of their hard work in the gym.”With local and national competition opening up again after the extended lay-off due to Covid, Anton and his coaches will now be working to ensure that there will be even greater success for the club.He added:“We had a great home show at Hampden and good wins at the Scottish Novice championships.“We’ve also been travelling to places like Sunderland and have more travel planned over the rest of the year.“So it’s great to be back out there competing again.”Follow Lanarkshire Live Sport onTwitter via@LanLiveSport, like us onFacebookor find us onInstagramfor the latest sports news, pictures and video.
