The sepsis was a 'complication from asplenia (the absence of a spleen).'Dean had her spleen removed over 10 years ago after suffering 'remote blunt trauma to her torso' in a major car accident in 2009.

Those with weakened immune systems - such as those who've had spleen removal - are at the most risk.The bacteria 'can enter the blood stream, which can lead to infection in various parts of the body.'
