With a lifetime of legendary work showing at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures this month, Sophia Loren has no intention of slowing down.

After nearly 75 years of acting onscreen as one of the last remaining stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, the Oscar winner tells Deadline that when it comes to reinvention and career longevity, her “secret is never to have a plan B,” and legacy is the last thing on her mind. “So that when you are faced with an obstacle you find insurmountable, you don’t end up taking the easy way out,” explains Loren. “You take a deep breath, push on and find the right solution to your problem as you have no choice but to move forward.

No plan Bs, only a plan A.” Having most recently starred in the 2020 Oscar-nominated film The Life Ahead, written and directed by her son Edoardo Ponti, Loren is looking forward to what’s next in her career. “I don’t want to think about legacy,” she says. “I want to think about my next movie.

I’ll think of legacy once I retire and I hope never to retire.” More than 60 years after she skipped out on the 1962 Oscars ceremony, where she was first awarded Best Actress for Two Women, the actress emphasizes that she “truly never in a million years thought I would win.” She became the first performer to win an Oscar for a non-English language role.
