People were left 'terrified' after hearing what they thought was an explosion just after midday on Saturday (March 4). It has now been confirmed that this was a sonic boom which heard across parts of the UK.
The loud bang was heard across several counties in the midlands, with some managing to capture the boom on camera. It has since been confirmed that the sonic boom was created by RAF Typhoon planes escorting a passenger plane that had lost communication.
The plane had two people on board and was flying from Iceland to Nairobi via Southend when it lost contact and had to be escorted to Stansted Airport.
