Sonia O’Sullivan has weighed in on Team Ireland’s athletics performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and insisted that mistakes were made.
Our best-known Olympian, who claimed the silver medal in the 5000-meter race at the games in Sydney and whose 1994 world record stood until 2017, argued that the athletes should not have been in Tokyo for the duration of the games.
Sonia, now 51, even went as far as to suggest that having the team there from the outset of the games may have allowed the nerves to sink in and contributed to a lacklustre performance.
The 4.400 mixed relay team were the only ones who managed a notable performance when they finished eighth in the final on Saturday, after a record-breaking placing the day before.
