Modern Family ’s Sofia Vergara is a household name after playing fiery Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the US sitcom – however, the Colombian actress is heading into new territory for Netflix’s latest crime drama, Griselda.
Based on the story of real-life Colombian drug trafficker Griselda Blanco, the six-parter stars Sofia as the “godmother of cocaine” as she flees her home country with her sons to begin a cartel operation in 1970s Miami, Florida.
While Sofia admits she’d never heard of Griselda Blanco – who was assassinated in 2012 aged 69 – before moving to the States in the late 90s, the queenpin’s story hit close to home. “I grew up in Colombia during that era – the 70s, the 80s and 90s when the narco [narcotics] traffic unfortunately was a big part of our lives.
My brother was in that business,” says Sofia, 51, whose brother Rafael was murdered in 1998 after becoming involved in the Colombian drugs industry.
