SNP ministers have been accused of discouraging young people from applying for the new free bus passes in Scotland. Neil Bibby, Scottish Labour 's transports spokesman, has written to Transport Secretary Graeme Dey to demand the government take leadership of the problem and get as many under 22s applying for the scheme as possible.
In his letter Bibby accused the SNP/Green government of "mixed messages" over the launch of the passes which are due to go live on January 31.
Anyone aged 5-21 can apply for the pass that will give them free bus travel across Scotland, however young people are only asked to apply if they need to make "essential journeys".
Writing to Dey, Bibby said: "The Scottish Government ’s mixed messages over when to apply and difficulties reported by parents and young people about how to apply could discourage applications and mean that young people will miss out on their new entitlement to free bus travel, including many of those who need it most. "That is simply not acceptable." Bibby has also urged the government to follow the example taken by Labour -led Inverclyde Council.
