Heartbreaking pictures show the scene on an Irish beach where at least six whales died after being washed up. Animal lovers fear a seventh northern bottlenose whale seen desperately trying to get out to sea could perish too.
The tragedy, believed to be the largest live stranding in Irish history, unfolded at the beach in Rossnowlagh, Donegal, today.
Members of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group said they did everything they could to make the huge animals comfortable, but were unable to save their lives.
Whale enthusiast Sibeal Regan said one of the majestic mammals was seen trying to breathe as it attempted to swim out with the tide, but its chances of survival are slim.
