A single mum of three has been told she owes more than £12,000 in child benefit because of a change in the law seven years ago.
Caroline Wattley says she's been left with no choice but to remortgage her home to repay the bill that includes £1,000 in late penalty charges. "I am being asked to pay HMRC over £12,000 including a penalty and interest," Caroline, who lives in Birmingham, told Mirror Money. "I actually spent six years unaware of what my obligations were, only to receive a letter last October suggesting I check whether I should have been self-assessing and paying the above." After researching what it was all about, Caroline discovered she may have overclaimed on child benefit almost a decade ago.
