A shopper was rushed to hospital after he was injured when a ceiling collapsed inside a Sainsbury's store. Shaz Akram was paying for his cigarettes inside the branch in Newcastle Central Station when he heard a loud drilling noise and the ceiling then collapsed.

He was hit by a piece of the ceiling and suffered the worst injuries out of everyone who was in the queue with him on Wednesday at around 3pm, Chronicle Live reports.

The 36-year-old, from High Heaton, said: "I popped into Sainsbury's as I wanted some cigarettes. "As I stood there, I heard a big drilling sound. "Then all of the ceiling fell through onto my face."
