Though Toranaga does not control the wind, Hiroyuki Sanada, the actor that plays him in Shōgun, holds the forecast for the series’ Season 2 in the palm of his hand.
Speaking with Deadline along with series creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks backstage Friday at the Critics Choice Awards, where the historical drama series sliced its way to a leading four wins, Sanada, who won tonight for Best Actor in a Drama Series, teased his desires for Season 2. “In Season 1, [Toranaga] didn’t become a Shōgun yet.
So, I’d like to see him become the leader of Japan. That is my hope.” The show, based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name and set in 1600s feudal Japan, follows Lord Yoshii Toranaga’s fight against his enemies on the Council of Regents.
His plans for unyielding power is complicated by the arrival of John Blackthrone (Cosmo Jarvis), a shipwrecked English pilot who claims to hold secrets that could change the tides in Toranaga’s favor.
