An award-winning deli, hailed as the first in the region to offer a totally gluten-free menu, is to close. Off the Wheaten Track, on Oxford Road in Altrincham, made the shock announcement on its Instagram account on Monday that its "journey has come to an end." The business is run by husband and wife team Hayley and David Hadfield, and also supplies many of its gluten-free bakes to other cafes across the region.

Their announcement was greeted with an outpouring of love from loyal customers over the years who say they're "gutted" and "devastated" by the news.

The Hadfields captioned their post with a nod to a Verve anthem saying: "It's a Bitter Sweet Symphony. That's life." They added: "The Off the Wheaten Track journey has come to an end." Explaining the closure after six years in Altrincham in a series of photos, Hayley wrote: "The most emotional and bitter sweet post I will ever write. "We've had the time of our lives and this will come as a shock and surprise for many, but David and I have made the very difficult decision to permanently close Off the Wheaten Track Deli. "We are both proud of what we have achieved in almost six years of trading.

The very first exclusively gluten free deli in Altrincham and Greater Manchester. A niche business the haters said would never last more than three months! "We defied all the odds and nurtured our little business like it was our own child.
