His 151st and final appearance for the Gunners came in a late cameo off the bench in the Boxing Day win over Chelsea, but Mikel Arteta had already made it clear to him that was well down the pecking order when it came to the club's centre-backs.
His move to Schalke, who are currently bottom of the Bundesliga, comes as the German club are allowing their 20-year-old defender Ozan Kabak to join Liverpool on loan until the end of the season.
