In February of 2022, Shailene and Aaron split up and called off their engagement. At the time, a source shared why they broke up.

They announced their engagement one year prior. In another part of the mag, she did reference “a really awful, traumatic thing” that happened in 2022, but she did not say Aaron‘s name so this is not necessarily about their split. “I had a really awful, traumatic thing happen in early 2022,” Shailene said. “I felt like I lost my soul, my self, my happiness, my joy.
