Selena Gomez is looking back on her music career when she was still operating with her band The Scene and signed to Disney.
The 31-year-old Rare pop star launched her pop era as the frontwoman of the band. They released three albums together before she stepped out and went fully solo.
During a recent appearance at Twilio’s SIGNAL conference, Selena explained that she “fought” Disney for the right to release a song that was initially intended for another artist. Read more about the song Selena Gomez “fought” for… The song in question was “Who Says,” which arrived in 2011. “It’s actually a funny story: I was working with Disney at the time, and they were actually giving the song to another artist,” Selena recalled, via People. “And I cried — I remember, I was with my mom — because I loved the song so much,” she continued, explaining that she made a case for keeping the track. “I basically said to my label, ‘I feel like my fans are young and they need it.’ That’s all I kept saying because I was 16 at the time.
I was like, ‘I think my fans really need it; tell [them] my fans really need the song.’” Of course, it ended up working out in her favor. Selena reflected on what “Who Says” meant to her, saying, “And I love, love that song, and it has carried with me through my whole career, and I fought for it.” At the time, “Who Says” became Selena‘s biggest hit on the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at No.
