Thousands of young people across Scotland are unlocking their potential by choosing Scottish Apprenticeships.Developed in partnership with employers, Scottish Apprenticeships meet the changing needs of businesses in all sectors, ensuring skills for today and the future.A Foundation Apprenticeship gave bright spark Harley Higgins a foot in the door with his employer while he was still at school and engineered his future career.

Harley, 18, of Greenock, chose a Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering at Clydeview Academy in Gourock to get on-the-job experience.

His work placement with energy supply specialist Aggreko in Dumbarton led to a Modern Apprenticeship job in Multi-skilled Engineering – ahead of 300 other candidates.

Foundation Apprenticeships are subject choices that offer school pupils industry insight and a work-based learning qualification at the same level as a Higher.Harley said: “The Foundation Apprenticeship opened my eyes to the opportunities that are available and gave my application the edge.”Aggreko Manufacturing Trainer Paul McGarry said: “Apprentices bring fresh ideas, and we mould them into the perfect engineers for Aggreko.”Shetlander Julie-Ann Murray went all out to get herself a Modern Apprenticeship on a sheep farm - and is now trusted to be left in charge.
