Scott Brown is on the verge of making shock decision to hang up his boots for good and rip up the last year of his contract at Aberdeen. Record Sport understands the former Celtic and Scotland skipper is this morning locked in talks with the Pittodrie club as they discuss terminating the final year of his existing deal with immediate effect.

An official announcement could even be made as soon as today as Brown prepares to call time on a glittering playing career to channel his efforts into becoming a manager. The 36-year-old agreed to move to the north east a year ago to join forces with former Hibs team mate Stephen Glass and take up a position in a new look coaching team.

But his position at the club has been in doubt ever since Glass was sacked and replaced by Jim Goodwin in the hotseat. Brown has been struggling for fitness since Goodwin’s arrival and was missing at Ibrox on Saturday when the Dons went down to a late defeat against Rangers.

But he has also been told he will have no significant input behind the scenes by the new boss and it’s understood this lack of a pathway towards a new career is behind his decision to move on.It’s also believed Goodwin and his skipper got off to a bad start in their working relationship when Brown was interviewed as his potential managerial replacement, just 24 hours after the Irishman had left Paisley to join the Dons.Nine in a row legend Brown is now set to step down as one of the most decorated players in the history of Scottish football having won a League Cup at Hibs before lifting ten top flight titles at Parkhead as well as six Scottish Cups and another six League Cups during 14 years at the club.
