Ex-Rangers star Scott Arfield has been shown a red card over his plans to open a pub just yards from Ibrox. Arfield, 35, wanted to convert a former bookmakers into a bar and attract legions of thirsty fans.

He submitted plans last year for the site at 150 Copland Road but was told it did not fit local rules. Concerns were also raised over the venue sitting in a residential area and bin storage issues. He lodged revised proposals last month in a second attempt to open the pub's doors but furious locals hit out and raised concerns about the conduct of fans on match days.

Glasgow City Council have now rejected the latest bid and ruled it cannot go ahead due to its possible impact on residents.Local resident Sharon Benzie had earlier blasted the move.

She said: "The pub will be situated near Rangers Football stadium which seats over 50,000 fans and in addition to that holds licensed events within the building.
