Scots would rather risk homelessness than give up their pet, survey suggests

A group campaigning for tenants to be allowed to keep pets in council and social housing claim a majority of Scots would risk homelessness to keep their beloved furry family members.

Pets and Tenants Together surveyed 787 adults in Scotland and found seven in ten would risk being thrown out on the street rather than lose their pet.

In the survey, 64% were landlords, 35% tenants and 1% were people seeking refuge. The campaign also found fewer than 20% of landlords believe a lack of pet-friendly accommodation causes people to give up their pets, despite almost three-quarters of those surveyed having pets of their own.

According to the data, 95% of tenants said they would support pet-friendly accommodation as a default compared to 39% of landlords.Home owners cited fears around damage, insurance and other financial implications for reasons in which they wouldn't support tenants owning pets.However, three in every five believe pets are important members of the family.One tenant interviewed said, “Dogs are family.
