A busy Scots railway line will reopen next week after a huge sinkhole appeared under the tracks. The colossal fault, stretching one metre deep, emerged last week between Caldercruix and Drumgelloch in North Lanarkshire.
It forced the cancellations of numerous trains throughout the central belt as engineers from Network Rail were called to repair the damage. It is thought that the sinkhole was caused by an underground spring.
Images from the scene show the ground beneath the tracks split in half by the huge hole. After almost a week of repairs, the operator has confirmed that the line will reopen on Monday.
The final step of the restoration works will take place tomorrow and will see the line tamped by engineers.Tamping is the equivalent of shaking your duvet out - it settles and aligns the track, ready for trains to run.
