Scots firework licensing scheme to be delayed by SNP Ministers over budget pressure

SNP Ministers are delaying a key part of a new law designed to clamp down on the sale and use of fireworks. Implementation of a licensing scheme will be extended after the Government cited “financial pressures”.The Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles (Scotland) Bill was passed by MSPs in 2022.The new law only allows fireworks to be bought and used by members of the public at certain times of the year, including Guy Fawkes Day.Other provisions, such as a ban on providing fireworks to children, have also come into force.But a key part of the legislation - requiring people to have a licence to buy and use certain fireworks - has now been kicked into the future.In a written answer, Minister Siobhian Brown said:“After careful consideration and assessment of the significant financial pressures the Scottish Government is facing following the UK Government’s budget settlement, the Government has decided to extend the timeframe for delivery and implementation of the firework licensing requirement…to 2026.”This is a breaking news story - more to follow.
