A Callander lad whose parents were warned he might not survive after being born 16 weeks premature enjoyed his first day at primary school on Wednesday.Daniel Wood was born at 24 weeks weighing just 2lb 1oz.But five years on his family were overjoyed to be able to see him walk through the gates of Callander Primary School this week like many other new P1 starts across the district.Daniel’s sister Christina was also born prematurely – at 36 weeks in December 2012 – and was looked after for nine days at Forth Valley Royal Hospital. However, when Daniel was born in July 2018 he arrived so early that he spent the following 88 days in hospital care. But this week mum Charlotte and dad Andrew were able to experience their son enjoying a special milestone – starting school. On Wednesday Charlotte said: “He tells me he has had the best day ever – and is going back tomorrow!“We are just so proud of our wee boy.“I don’t think yet he grasps just how far he has come – but if he ever tells me he can’t do something I will remind him.”Mum Charlotte previously told the Observer just how grateful she was to those who had fought to give Daniel the best chance of life. She said: “FVRH is a level two neonatal hospital and looks after babies born from 28 weeks.

As I was just 24 weeks the decision was made that if I was stable enough and the drugs to stop the contractions worked, I would be transferred to a level three hospital wherever they had a bed.“The potential to be taken to Liverpool or even Ireland was on the cards – but a bed was found at Wishaw University Hospital.“When I was transferred via blue light the labour was stopped for another few days.
