A Scots health board has been ordered to apologise to a patient who was left suffering from a rare brain infection. Several medics from NHS Fife failed to spot the signs of viral encephalitis which developed after the patient had their wisdom tooth removed.
Despite suffering from a persistent headache and being seen by specialists, they were discharged from the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy without undergoing an MRI scan.
A complaint was submitted to the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman who found that several diagnostic errors had been made when treating the person, referred to as C.As well as apologising, NHS Fife must also hold a special review into the case to ensure the same mistakes are not made again.In a decision notice
