As January comes to a close, New Year’s resolutions should be well on their way. If you aimed to form a new healthy habit in 2025, it might be starting to stick by now – at least according to the long held belief that it takes 21 days to form a habit.

However, there’s good news if you’re struggling to keep a healthy routine up. New research suggests that habits actually take much longer to lock down.

Researchers at the University of South Australia looked at data from more than 2600 people to find out how long new habits take to form.

The team hope their research will help inform public health initiatives that support people making healthy lifestyle changes to prevent chronic disease such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
