A last minute public holiday has been declared in South Ayrshire causing schools to close. Politicians previously decided the council would not have a day off on May 8 to mark the war anniversary of VE day.But after a dramatic u-turn children and council workers will now get the day off on that date.
The unexpected decision will cost South Ayrshire Council £53,000.Councillor Alec Clark argued the occasion should be honoured with a holiday at a full council meeting yesterday morning.South Ayrshire had opted to have Monday 4 off instead.
