Sir Samuel Alexander Mendes CBE (born 1 August 1965) is an English film and stage director, producer and screenwriter. In theatre, he is known for his dark re-inventions of the stage musicals Cabaret (1994), Oliver! (1994), Company (1995), and Gypsy (2003). He directed an original West End stage musical for the first time with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2013).
For directing the play The Ferryman, Mendes was awarded the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play in 2019.
EXCLUSIVE: After meeting and auditioning with a number actors, Top Boy breakout Micheal Ward has been set to join Olivia Colman in the Searchlight drama Empire of Light with Sam Mendes directing.
The film will mark Mendes first film since his Oscar-winning World War I drama 1917 and he also penned the script and marks his first solo script.
The film will be produced by Mendes and Pippa Harris’ Neal Street Productions. Production is expected to star in fall of 2022.While plot details are under wraps, the film is described as love story, set in and around a beautiful old cinema, on the South Coast of England in the 1980s.
