Sam Lammers reckons there was no need to seek out his fellow countrymen for their references on Rangers. Not when the names on the list of Dutch Masters to have served at Ibrox speak for themselves. The 26-year-old is following a proud tradition as he becomes the latest in a long line of players and coaches from Holland to make their home in Govan.

What began as a trickle when Walter Smith signed up Pieter Huistra, Theo Snelders and Peter van Vossen for the Light Blues’ assault on nine-in-a-row became a Oranje influx when Dick Advocaat arrived in 1998 promising to build a cosmopolitan team fit for continental competition as well as domestic dominance. He brought with him Netherlands internationals Ronald de Boer, Arthur Numan, Gio van Bronckhorst, Michael Mols, Fernando Ricksen and Bert Konterman.

Ronald’s twin Frank and keeper Ronald Waterreus also spent time in Glasgow before van Bronkhorst returned as boss in 2021 to lead the club on their Seville thrill ride plus last year’s Scottish Cup triumph.Lammers didn’t bother speaking to any of those famous names for their advice before agreeing to join Gers.

But the message he got from new boss Michael Beale was enough to convince him he can become the latest import from the Low Countries to hit the heights in Scotland.“I knew already about the players and the managers that have been here before,” said the £3million recruit for Serie A outfit Atalanta “When the trainer came over to see me in Italy, he told me and showed me a list of the players and the coaches that have been at Rangers.“They were not the worst players!
