A Salford chef who cooked almost 300 pies for NHS staff battling Covid-19 has been featured in a TV advert with the National Lottery.

John Preston, 61, found himself without any customers to cook for when the cafe he runs at the Brain and Spinal Injury Centre was closed to the public at the start of lockdown.

But he decided to carry on cooking and instead baked pies to deliver to NHS staff treating Covid-19 patients round the clock at the nearby Salford Royal Hospital.

John told the Manchester Evening News that due to social distancing measures he has been working alone in the cafe of the centre on Eccles New Road and at one point was baking almost 60 pies a week for frontline NHS staff.
