Sainsbury's hikes cost of butter by 40p in a week as price rises continue

A supermarket has hiked the price of its butter by 40 pence in the last week. Our weekly comparison of basics like bread and milk has been keeping track of prices since March.

While last week rises seemed to be slowing down - and mince prices refreshingly dropping - this week's biggest increase will come as a shock to most shoppers.

Sainsbury's has put a 22.8% increase on its 250g block of butter, taking it from £1.75 to a staggering £2.15. Read more: Things to do with the kids in and around Manchester this summer Only last month we reported how customers were criticising Morrisons, when it put the price of the product up to £1.99 and the increase at Sainsbury's now makes it the most expensive of the lot for butter - and the second most expensive overall.

Still taking the unfortunate position as most expensive for the full shopping list is Morrisons, at £12.06, itself introducing another rise this week with a loaf of bread rising from 79p to 85p.
