James Byrne can be seen speaking with his victim in Oldham Street when he suddenly punches him in the face, reports the Manchester Evening News.
He lands another blow, knocking him to the ground, before kicking him to the head and throwing more punches. Rough sleeper Byrne, 33, said he attacked the man because he had threatened to set fire to his tent.
His lawyer said he lost his temper because he knew a homeless man who had been murdered after his tent was set alight. At Manchester Crown Court on Wednesday, Byrne was jailed for 20 months.
