The Royal Mint has listed the rarest 50p coins in circulation with some worth hundreds. The coin maker has ranked the currency on when they were produced and their official mintage figure of how many were made.
The most valuable is the Kew Gardens edition, worth £650. There are 200 million 50ps circulating in the UK alone. The lower the mintage figure, the less coins that are in circulation, making them rarer and more valuable.
Many of the 50ps in question were minted to commemorate a notable occasion in culture, sport or history. The Kew Gardens coin was released in 2009 to mark 250 years since the famous gardens opened in 1759.
Other coin designs include Harry Potter and the triathlon, which marked the beginning of the 2012 Olympic games in London.Certain 50ps are highly sought after by avid collectors and can be sold online for quite large amounts.
