Rory McIlroy has suffered a disappointing exit from The Open Championship, missing the cut for only the third time in his career after one of his worst performances at the final major of the year. The Northern Irish golfer finished the first two rounds at 11-over-par, just one stroke better than his previous worst performance at Muirfield in 2013.
After a disastrous start with a seven-over-par 78 in the first round on Thursday, McIlroy had a mountain to climb going into the second day.
Unfortunately, he couldn't replicate the form that saw him come close to winning the US Open last month, recording a four-over 75 on Friday in a forgettable second round.McIlroy's day got off to a rocky start as challenging conditions along the Scottish coastline proved too much for him.
His first bogey came at the third hole, but it was the events of the next hole that signalled the beginning of the end for the four-time major champion.
