Football dominated Rio Ferdinand's life so much he even missed the birth of one of his children. The former Manchester United star has been discussing his latest experience of fatherhood after his wife Kate gave birth to their son Cree in December.

Rio said his life has changed dramatically since the death of his first wife Rebecca, with whom he has three children, in 2015, and he has learned to put his family first. "I was probably not there 75 per cent of the time," he said in an interview for The Mid Point podcast with Gabby Logan. "I was on the road travelling around Europe and playing games.

When I was there, was I really there mentally? I used that excuse, 'Oh I've got a game' - I probably left an hour early if I'm being honest.
